Independence Hall was the original home of the "Liberty Bell".
The original Liberty Bell, with the distinctive crack, is now on display across the street in the Liberty Bell Center.
In 1790, Congress first met in Congress Hall, mere footsteps away from Independence Hall, on December 6. Philadelphia would
remain the seat of the federal government until 1800, where it made its permanent home in Washington, DC. During this time
Independence Hall served as the Capitol Building with executive offices, while the Supreme Court assembled in Old City Hall and
the Congress continued to meet in Congress Hall. The Battle of Gettysburg, (July 1863) the turning point and the
bloodiest campaign of the Civil War, ended Lee's invasion of the North. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered his most famous
speech, the Gettysburg Address, at Soldier's National Cemetery dedication, now known as Gettysburg National Cemetery.
The Pocono's are and have been Pennsylvania's most popular tourist destination. The Poconos encompass the Delaware State Forest, seven state parks,
seventeen state game lands, and one national park. The region is also a popular winter destination, offering snowmobile trails, snowshoeing, and
eagle watching.
Harrisburg, the capitol of Pennsylvania, is home to one of the most magnificent State Capitol buildings in the United States. Completed in 1906,
the central dome rises to a height of 272 feet and was modeled on that of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Rome. During the first part of
the 19th century, Harrisburg was a notable stopping place along the Underground Railroad, as escaped slaves would be transported across the
Susquehanna River, before heading north towards Canada.
